Project context

"Climate change, impacts and adaptation strategies in the Alpine Space" (www.climchalp.org) is a strategic project (Interreg III B) aiming to provide a strong basis for the future Alpine Space program. The project content is based on publications concerning observed and expected climate change in the Alps and its potential and expected impacts.

Leading partner: Bayerisches Staatsministerium für Umwelt, Gesundheit und Verbraucherschutz Referat Klimaschutz

French partners:

  • Région Rhône-Alpes : Direction Environnement – Energie (gave mandate to the PGRN)
  • ONERC : Observatoire National sur les Effets du Réchauffement Climatique
  • UCBL : consortium including the UCBL (LST), Cete Lyon, Cemagref Grenoble et UJF (Lirigm)

WP5 French Partner Objectives - "Natural Hazards" Module

The ClmChAlp project was divided into several Working Groups [ Download the Extended Scientific Final Reports - ESFR - PDF in english ] :

  • WP 5. Climate change and corresponding natural hazards:
    • "Climate Change” Module: synthesis of the existing knowledge, evaluation of the historical climatic changes, evaluation of the Regional Climate Change and their uncertainties, future needs and Research agenda. [ ESFR ]
    • "Natural Hazards” Module: historical assessment of natural hazards, evaluation of the natural events modification that can be attributed to climate change, analysis of future scenarios and the potential evolution of natural events. [ ESFR ]

  • WP 6. Monitoring, prevention and management of specific impacts of climate change on Nature: monitoring, tele-detection, alert systems… [ ESFR ]

  • WP 7. Impacts of climate change on territorial development and on territorial economy. [ ESFR ]

  • WP 8. Flexible response network: reflection on the possible adaptation of administrative and political structures. [ ESFR ]

The “Pôle Grenoblois Risques Naturels” (PGRN) and the “Observatoire National sur les Effets du Réchauffement Climatique” (ONERC) have proposed to constitute working groups corresponding to the « ClimChAlp » project activities, involving both Natural and Socio-Economic Science research teams.

The "climate change" module has been divided in two working groups:

  • Working group on regional modelling :
  • collecting all existing information on regional climate models scenarios already performed regarding the Alpine zone,
  • assessment of the different regional climate models,
  • assessment of different existing regional climate scenarios,
  • evaluation of the potential for conducting new regional climate scenarios.
  • Working group on past climate change over the alpine zone :
  • assessment of already published information regarding observational data for the alpine zone,
  • assessment of already published information regarding model data (e.g. re-analyses) for the Alpine zone,
  • assessment of already published information regarding extreme events for the alpine zone,
  • evaluation of the potential for improvements of observational networks and new observations.
